A Private Paradise

The sail across from Bequia was short and uneventful although we were hard on the wind as the island is on the outermost eastern edge of the Grenadines. We were not sure what to expect but we were welcomed by the harbourmaster who guided us to a mooring in the bay. Anchoring is not allowed and there 30 or 40 mooring bouys available.

Dianne and I had read a book by Colin Tennant’s wife about the island and then decided we should go and have a look. The book is called “Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown”.https://www.publishersweekly.com/9780306846366 It is an autobiography by Anne Glenconner, who was a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret and a close friend of the royal family. The book was published in 2019 and is an interesting read both for the comments on Mustique and for the observations on her life and marriage.

History

Mustique is one of a chain of volcanic islands formed by the collision of the Atlantic and Caribbean tectonic plates. The island covers an area of 1,400 acres (5.7 km2) and has several coral reefs that provide habitat for marine life.

The history dates back to the pre-Columbian era when it was inhabited by indigenous people who arrived from South America around 2500 BC. Later, it was occupied by the Arawaks and then by the Caribs, who left behind some simple tools that can still be found on the island.

The first European settlers arrived on Mustique in the 17th century when the island was claimed by France. The name Mustique comes from the French word for mosquito, moustique, as the island was once infested with these insects. The French established sugar and cotton plantations on the island, using enslaved African labor. The island changed hands several times between France and Britain during the colonial wars, until it was finally ceded to Britain in 1763. The British built three forts on the island to protect it from pirates and invaders.

However, after the abolition of slavery in 1834, the plantations went downhill and in 1958, it was purchased by Colin Tennant, 3rd Baron Glenconner, a Scottish aristocrat and entrepreneur. At the time it was a desolate island covered in shrubs, cacti, and jungle with no natural water, roads, or jetty. Tennant had a vision of transforming Mustique into a private paradise for the rich and famous.

He gave a 10-acre plot of land on the island as a wedding gift to his friend Princess Margaret, the sister of Queen Elizabeth II, who built a villa called Les Jolies Eaux. Tennant also invited other celebrities and royals to buy or rent villas on the island, creating a very exclusive community

In 1979, Tennant sold his shares in Mustique to a consortium of villa owners, who formed the Mustique Company to manage the island’s affairs. The company is responsible for maintaining the island’s infrastructure, security, environment, and services. The company also owns and operates the only hotel called the Cotton House.
The company also runs a beach café and another restaurant called the Veranda. The company also offers ferry service from Saint Vincent on the M/V Endeavour².

Current Day

Today, Mustique remains a private island that is owned by its homeowners. There are around 120 villas on the island, many of which are available for rent through the Mustique Company https://mustique-island.com/about/the-company. The villas come with staff, including chefs, butlers, and housekeepers, who cater to every need of the guests. The villas also have access to amenities such as tennis courts, golf carts, horses, and water sports equipment. Mustique is an ideal destination for those who seek privacy, tranquility, and luxury.

You can only go to the island if you are staying at one of the accommodation options. The island has nine beaches that offer pristine sand and turquoise water. Some of the beaches are secluded and quiet, while others are more lively and social. The island also has a network of trails that allow visitors to explore its natural beauty and wildlife. The island is home to tortoises, herons, iguanas, and many other species. The island also hosts various events throughout the year, such as music festivals, cocktail parties, and charity fundraisers.

The island has a reputation for being discreet and respectful of its guests’ privacy.

Privacy
Mustique is a private island that is owned by its homeowners, who have formed the Mustique Company to manage its affairs. The Mustique Company has the authority to grant or deny access to the island and its waters, as well as to impose fees and charges for various services.

Before you go to Mustique you need to obtain permission from the Mustique Company before entering the island’s waters. You can contact them by phone, email, or VHF radio. You will need to provide information such as your boat name, registration number, flag, length, draft, number of passengers and crew, arrival date and time, departure date and time, and intended anchorage or mooring location. You need to clear customs and immigration into the Grenadines at either St. Vincent or Union Island before sailing to Mystique but you can clear out of Mystique at the airport.

You need to pay a mooring fee of US$75 per night for boats up to 60 feet in length, and US$150 per night for boats over 60 feet in length for a minimum of three nights. The mooring fee includes very well-maintained moorings in Britannia Bay, access to water, garbage disposal, security patrols, and dinghy dock facilities. You can pay the mooring fee at the Mustique Company office or at Basil’s Bar.

You must respect the island’s rules and regulations while sailing and staying on Mustique. These include observing the speed limit of 5 knots within the harbor area, keeping a safe distance from other boats and swimmers, avoiding anchoring or fishing in prohibited areas, refraining from loud music or noise after 10 pm, respecting the privacy of the villa owners and guests by only going on land in the allowed areas which are very small, and following the environmental guidelines for waste disposal and conservation. You can get a tour of the island by taxi but it only takes about one hour as there is not much you can see.

You need to book any activities or services that you wish to enjoy on Mustique through the Mustique Company. These include dining at restaurants, visiting the spa, playing tennis or golf, renting water sports equipment, taking island tours or taxi rides, or attending any events or parties.

Arriving in Britannia Bay

We went ashore to book the restaurant at Basils Bar https://basilsbar.com/ and found there were few other people there. There were some in the bar from a couple of charter yachts in the harbour but only one other couple for dinner. Very quiet for a place that has a reputation for parties. Perhaps we were there the wrong day of the week or the wrong season!!

Since you can’t go more than 100 meters on the island without a guide on the first day we just snorkelled and rested. There was no hurry as we had paid for three days and we were not sure how we were going to fill the time.

Island Tour

On the second day Di, Pete, and I took a taxi tour. The island was very neat and tidy, manicured in all the public spaces, but you could see very little of the private houses except distant views.

Area Around the Airport

The airport was interesting as the runway was like a banana, curved up at both ends. There was a reasonable terminal but only turboprops came in. I checked out of there as our next stop would be Carriocou which is part of Grenada and the checkout was friendly and easy.

The Terraces on the top of Mustique is the largest villa there and sits on 17 acres of land.

Macaroni Beach

Macaroni Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches and is in a very natural setting with smaller villas peppered in the hills above. Most of the bush is allowed to stay natural and it is all interspersed with the Flamboyant tree a favourite of the islands.

There is a local village just to the north of the wharf with a small town but we did not visit it while we were there. Many of the workers on the island come in live on other islands and commute by ferry for extended work shifts.

The friendliest individuals on the island were the laughing gulls who visited us most days. One decided it particularly liked the Starlink dish.

The snorkelling was not bad but not very exciting. I went out further to the reef but the water was murky and the reef was really bare. A few schools of fish but again not very exciting.

The sunset on the last evening before we left was spectacular with large buildups in the distance.

Departing

As we left the next morning I wanted to take some more photos but it was directly into the sun so not have much luck. We did pass the large solar energy installation which was interesting as many islands only have diesel generators, a few have wind generators and solar is only just appearing.

Overall we found that the visit was interesting but we would not return.

Summer Cruising

Summer cruising in the Caribbean is a great option for people like us who don’t really want to lock down for the hurricane season in a “safe” haven. Officially the hurricane season begins in June and ends at the end of November with the high season for storms being August, September, and October as can be seen on the NOAA website which puts out a lot of information for cruisers.https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/climo/#stca

Our plan is to sail on the shoulders of the hurricane season(summer) as far north as practicable and spend the peak of the hurricane season in the south with escape options.

The conventional approach is to keep a close eye on the weather looking for anything developing in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa and then heading west. Typically the forecast will give at least 5 to 7 days’ notice of impending weather although the actual severity of any of these systems can change rapidly as they progress west.  These systems form 5 – 20 degrees north of the equator and usually move slightly northwards as they head west, although this is not always the case. The spread of tracks are shown in the picture below from NOAA.

Historically, significant tropical storms in the Caribbean don’t get south of 10 degrees north so our plan is to stay within a couple of days travel (about 400 miles) of this latitude with options to head further south if necessary. The landmass of Venezuela and Colombia generally limits the southern extent of major storms.

Looking back at historical tracks of major storms the only major hurricane to hit Trinidad was Flora, a destructive Category 3 hurricane, in 1963. However, with the current change in our climate records continue to be rewritten.

Crew

On board Eleuthera were Barb and Hew, and from late May also Pete and Di who had joined us in St Martin for a few weeks. The plan was to cruise slowly south with a destination of Trinidad in mid-July to lift the boat to renew the antifouling. We had lots of islands to visit and explore with the planned highlights being Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, and St Lucia.

All was going well as we cruised south through the islands enjoying sailing, swimming, diving, and various land-based activities at St Barts, St Kitts and Nevis, and then Antigua. Guadeloupe

Leaving Antigua on 16 June we headed south for Guadeloupe planning to spend some time exploring this spectacular island. Not long after leaving Antigua, we came across a fast travelling water spout – the atmosphere was unstable.

After a great sail, with no further weather phenomena, we arrived in Deshaies on Saturday afternoon 17 June to discover we were unable to check in as the facilities were all closed. Sunday was the same with even the police station closed. However, it seemed such a pity to miss the town so we did go ashore for dinner.

As an aside the French islands generally have the least bureaucracy at the border and the best food. Clearances are completed online at a special terminal located in a local business, often a chandlery or a tourist operation.

At this stage, the long-range weather forecasts were suggesting an early tropical storm was on its way and looked to be headed somewhere between Guadeloupe and St Martin in about a week. Our plans to spend time in the northern islands went out the window and it was time to go further South.

Heading South

Given check-in difficulties and uncertainty around the weather, we continued south on Sunday to Isles de Saints with another great sail in classic Caribbean conditions with 15 – 18 knots on the beam. Champagne sailing as Pete pointed out although probably a little too fast to catch fish.

Arriving on Sunday afternoon we picked up a mooring but everything was shut here as well. Looking at the forecast updates that evening it became apparent the storm was not behaving itself as it intensified and moved west and not north.

Pete was talking with a friend also called Brett, a super yacht skipper who suggested an anchorage in Martinique as a suitable spot to shelter.

The next morning 19 June we awoke to discover the storm had a name, Bret and it was tracking for the Lesser Antilles and strengthening. Predictions had it reaching the islands in about 4 or 5 days with 80-mile-an-hour winds! With a 5 am start, it was off for Martinique and another great sail as more and more yachts joined us for the trek south, we sailed past Dominica without stopping.

Martinique

Checking in at St Pierre and anchoring off the town for an overnight stop, Di went for a walk around the village befriending the local dogs but there was not much activity in the town. Interestingly the town had been destroyed in the 1800’s when the adjacent volcano erupted with the only survivor being a prisoner locked in the jail.

Another 5 am start the next day had us heading south again initially for Captain Brett’s safe harbour which was full of local boats seeking shelter, so on to Le Marin where we checked out. Di and Pete went shopping for supplies and Hew tried to get a bolt to repair the gooseneck but the chandlery was closed.

There is a large charter boat base here and all the operators on the dock were removing bimini’s and tying booms and sails down and adding additional mooring lines preparing for the worst. Also not a place to seek shelter.

St Lucia

Back on board, we carried on south again heading for St Lucia where we had a delivery to make. Some friends had asked us to deliver an outboard motor to a young local they have been helping so we were keen to hand it over.  Thanks to Starlink and WhatsApp Barb was able to make contact with Kenya and we stopped in Soufriere to hand it over. Kenya and a friend helped us pick up a mooring in the most spectacular bay under the Piton. They eagerly took delivery of the outboard and after photos were on their way. 

The local parks guys came out to collect the mooring fee and advised us to leave early the following morning as the storm was coming. There were several other boats in the bay with us all heading the same way.

Forecasts now had the storm passing between Martinique and St Lucia on Friday night 23 June so the plan was an early start and head for Bequia for shelter south of the centre of the storm. Bret was now getting close to a Category 1 hurricane in the forecasts.

Thursday 22 July and another 5 am start saw us the first boat to leave and head for Bequia.  

Bequia

A boisterous sail in a cross sea saw us make the 50 miles to Bequia by mid-morning but new forecasts now had Bret tracking further south across St Lucia.  This made the harbour in Port Elizabeth less attractive as it was now only marginally south of the storm centre and the various guides suggest holding on anchor was not great.  We had no desire to deal with an anchor dragging in the middle of a storm so off we went again.

Union Island in St Vincent and the Grenadines

Consulting the charts the next good shelter was Chatham Bay on the southwest corner of Union Island.  We had been there last year and felt this would offer shelter with high hillsides. On the way we saw a delightful pod of jumping dolphins and also a very energetic Seagull / Booby who fished next to the yacht for about 30mins.

Another 30 miles saw us in Chatham Bay for a late lunch and happily on a brand new mooring field in the bay put down by the resort.  The fee for staying on the mooring was to use the bar and restaurant! We dived on the mooring to check it out and the gear was obviously only a week or so old and plenty strong enough to hold Eleuthera.

The Aqua Resort guys took Barb over to Clifton to check in and make our arrival official. She reported an interesting trip on a rough track up through the forest. Cocktails that evening in the bar were a highlight.

As the afternoon went on more boats arrived in the bay and many more sailed past heading further south. This procession continued through most of Friday as well and included some bigger commercial vessels we had seen further north, people were taking this seriously. By Friday evening we had over 40 boats in the bay, some anchored and others on the moorings.  One or two left during the day obviously heading down to Carriacou about 15 miles away.

The Peak of the Storm

The winds didn’t pick up much until late Friday evening and we had 25-30 knots from the northeast through the night. On the back of the storm, the wind dropped and moved north and west as the eye went through to the north. Finally moving round to the southeast it picked up again and we had gusts of +40 knots for a few hours around daybreak. These gusts came screaming down the hillsides and across the bay at different angles making them quite exciting. For some reason in the northern corner of the bay, the wind funneled down the side laying some yachts right over as it hit them beam on. Several boats dragged anchors and generally had an adventurous time for an hour or two.

By Saturday evening everything had gone quiet in Chatham Bay, Bret had continued west and was petering out. St Lucia and St Vincent had 60-mile-an-hour winds and a lot of rain but not too much damage. Bret had first formed around 15 June, was named on the 19th, and hit the islands on 24 June. The first Atlantic storm of the season Bret did not track north but the forecasting and information on progress and potential track was great making it relatively easy to move out of its way.

Summary

We ended up sailing 250 miles to avoid Bret and think we made the right decisions not leaving things too late. One charter catamaran off Martinique did not heed the warnings and ended up with damage and the boat sank. They abandoned their yacht for a liferaft and were rescued after the storm had passed. Many questions were being asked as to why they had ignored the storm warnings.

The only disappointment was that we missed exploring the islands to the North. Sea conditions had dropped by Sunday and we headed back north again to Tobago Cays, Bequia, and Mustique.

We had a great sail and a good view of several little anchoring sites on the way if we ever wanted to come back. You may wonder why we take so many photos of odd islands but if you don’t you can never remember them, and some days it is too windy to stop and other days it is flat calm. Also sometimes there are great rock formations like Savan rock which looks like one thing from the north but something else entirely from the south!!

Back Through the Reef

We came back in through the Martinique Channel past Mopion, the Conch Shell Island and Punaise. Mopion is a favourite spot for cruisers and day trippers as it has lovely snorkelling and a little shelter on it to have lunch. The wind was great for sailing but not for anchoring in the open. We decided to look for shelter behind Petit St Vincent.

Petit St Vincent

We had called ahead for a reservation at the restaurant but Petit Saint Vincent was shut for renovations – end of the season again. When we arrived Di and I went for a snorkel. Di decided that there was no one staying on the island so no one would notice if she went for a walk, but a security guard turned up immediately and restated the policy that you could only walk on the beach not down all the private paths!! Back to the water.

Bequia is the second-largest island in the Grenadines, part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a Caribbean nation. It has a population of about 5,000 people and covers an area of 18 square kilometers and is small, cute, and friendly.

Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth is the capital and main town of Bequia, located on the leeward side of Admiralty Bay. It is a colourful and charming town that blends the old and the new, with traditional wooden houses, modern shops and restaurants, and a lively waterfront. The island is home to a traditional wooden boat building industry with several examples moored in the harbour.

There are shops for local crafts, souvenirs, clothing, and jewelry at the waterfront stalls and shops.

Port Elizabeth has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, where locals greet visitors with a smile and a wave, and where you can enjoy the island’s laid-back lifestyle and culture. We could only spend a few days here and did not get past the town which was enchanting and the longer we stayed the more we enjoyed the ambiance of the island.

Restaurants

There are many restaurants and cafes that offer a variety of cuisines, from local Creole dishes to international fare. We managed to eat at Open Deck & Bar, Mac’s Pizza, Greenhouse Cafe, Sugar and Spice, and have a drink while watching live music at the Fig Tree.

Live Music

Since we were there for so short a time we did not make the Bequia Maritime Museum, which displays models of boats, fishing gear, whaling tools, and artifacts because it was closed. Nor did we get to visit the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary, which rescues and rehabilitates hawksbill turtles before releasing them back into the wild. The area was very quiet but it was also the end of the season so many local people had taken a holiday.

Admiralty Bay – Mooring

Admiralty Bay is a natural harbour that is dotted with yachts, sailboats, and fishing vessels, and framed by green hills and palm trees. The Belmont Walkway is a scenic path that runs along the shore to Princess Margaret Beach.

The harbour has many boats in it and many moorings, though this was the low season. These moorings do not have a good reputation as some are legal and some not, and it is difficult to find out who owns which, and who is telling the truth.

The first night we selected one on the outer edge of the mooring field but in the morning a very large schooner was trying to lift the anchor and it was obviously tied around everything. We had decided to go diving so we thought we better anchor closer in, away from any chance of a collision.

We selected one and paid for one night then the next day a lady came up to us and told us it was hers and we were too big for it. We had dived on it and it seemed the best of the bunch. However, we now moved further out to a larger and deeper mooring.

Princess Margaret Walkway

After a lovely breakfast at the Greenhouse Cafe, Di and I decided to walk around the walkway to Princess Margaret Beach. The boys just decided to relax.

Diving

Pete, Hew, and I decided to go diving and Di went to have a spa which she said was great.

The dive master took us to the end of the harbour for a coral reef dive. Hew, I and Pete got into the water but one of the other divers had gear problems and we spent considerable time in the shallows waiting in rough conditions. Also, Pete’s BCD did not fit even though we had asked for an extra large, they had given us a large and we did not realize this until later. The result was Pete felt very uncomfortable and abandoned the first dive

The second dive was on an old tug called the Stratmann Wreck which sits just a few hundred meters off the shores of Admiralty Bay. It had sunk here in 2003 and today she sits upright in about 12 meters of water as an artificial reef. It was interesting to see the growth but too new and too shallow to be a really good dive.

The Moonhole – a private nature reserve

After three days we needed to leave to keep to schedule for Di and Pet’s departure from Grenada. On our departure, we sailed close to the Moonhole resort which was built in the 1960s but most now looks deserted. Tom and Gladdie Johnston started the Moonhole Company Limited and acquired the entire western tip of Bequia. They built their home under the enormous rock arch known as “Moonhole”. The Moonhole Company was dedicated to conserving the unique architecture, flora, fauna, and aquatic life on the western tip of Bequia. There are no roads here, only stone paths. They collect water from the clouds. The houses rely on the sun and the wind for power and on the trade winds for cooling. Leaving the Moonhole complex we passed the small islands on our port side and headed to Mustique.

Union Island

Union Island was our immigration point into the area called the” Saint Vincent and the Grenadines”. We entered Clifton Harbour which was the nicest and most casual check-in anywhere.

The harbour has all the yachts on mooring buoys and is close to the airport and a kite surfing bay. A local boat was always about to help out with picking up a mooring and for a small fee take our rubbish, great service with a smile.

We managed to get a mooring then got into the dinghy and drove under a little bridge to a dinghy harbour.

We hopped out of the dinghy and gave our documents to a very friendly agent then sat in a bar looking out to the harbour for a cool drink while we waited for them to come back. The little bar has a lending library and a small shop with normal beach clothes and some very good books about Caribbean flora and fauna. The arrival was made very pleasant and stress-free.

On a little atoll, near the mooring area, there is also a small bar for sunset drinks. with a view over the kite surfing area to the airport. The fact that there is always kite surfing here tells you something about the wind – incessant!!

The town has a collection of very pretty stores selling real local artwork. There is also a very helpful information centre and the Marine Park office if you need to ask anything about the Tobago cays. The town had a very pleasant feel and the local land tortoises are very cute.

The bars around the town were very cute and their names kept us amused.

After checking in and spending a night on Union island we moved onto Mayreau Island in the Tobago Cays Marine Park.

Tobago Cays

Tobago Cays Marine Park is a popular destination in the southern end of the Grenadines. The marine park consists of a 1,400-acre (5.7 km²) sand-bottom lagoon which encompasses the five cays, the Mayreau island and a 4 km Horseshoe Reef. The story of the marine park management and setup can be found with this link. Mayreau Island

Mayreau island appeared to be a lovely island with few people. We stopped for a night at Saline beach which was a lovely beach but because a cruise ship was in the harbour, they have first rights to most of the beach, so we could only land at one end. You can walk along the beach but you cannot go inland as it is taken up for the cruise ship visitors with chairs, a little day snack bar and drink bars. This tends to make it less than friendly!!

Met some fellow kiwis here, Colin and Marion Cashmore on Avant Garde and Matt and Jo McCaughan on Seamogs and after a few rums discovered we knew many people in common. Typical kiwi connections boating, flying and neighbours.

The next day we wanted to stop at Salt Whistle Bay which reputably had great beach bars and island liofe. A group of 5 catamarans were heading for it ahead of us and when we got closer we realised that the bay was really full and overcrowded. The wind was blowing 25kts and we thought that stopping there did not seem a good idea so we continued on to Tobago Cays.

Petit Bateau and Petit Rameau

We anchored in the channel between the two islands of Petit Bateau and Petit Rameau. There were mooring buoys there which were handy as the wind and the current were strong. Mr Mandy Man arrived in his boat, sorted out our mooring and booked us in for dinner all before lunch! We all hopped into the dingy to try the snorkelling around on the Horseshoe reef. Unfortunately with the howling wind, the water was really stirred up and not very clear. We did see some turtles but not much else.

Later we went and had dinner at the beach BBQ area on Petit Bateau.

Tobago Cays Reef Diving

The next day we went diving with one of the local operators, Glenroy, to look at Mayreau gardens and one other spot on the reef. We were expecting bad visibility but it was OK. Neville was getting the hang of his camera and the spiny lobsters were looking back at him knowing he could not take them!!! The Nurse shark just ignored him!

I have split the photos into three blocks, the divers, the fish and the lastly the coral and sponges.

Canouan

Canouan is a small island with several large expensive resorts. The marina to the south, Sandy Lane Yacht Club, is next to an airport that seemed to mostly service private jets. The island seemed to be a mix of private resorts with the locals excluded apart from when required for service jobs. Not the most welcoming of destinations.

We stopped in the Charles bay, off Charleston the largest town, but the wind through the valleys and off the hills made the anchorage untenable. We then shifted into the lee of the cliffs to the north of the harbour which was a pleasant anchorage and we were only accompanied by a couple of much larger boats.

We stayed for a night and some snorkelling then decided to move on and head back towards Union island to check out. Unfortunately, the holiday for Nev, Mark and Pete was coming to an end and they were all flying out around the same weekend from Grenada, and the yacht was going up on the hard for some TLC.

As we headed south we checked out of Union island at Clifton Bay in the northern end, then decided to anchor for the night at the bay in the Southern End called Chatham Bay. This was a lovely bay with three bars and some good snorkelling areas. We were tucked into the cliffs as again the wind was howling and we wanted a calm night. We saw a kiwi flag there and met Colin and Marion from the Bay of Islands and had a great chat.

There was a great collection of pelicans on the northern cliffs of the bay which kept us amused. for some time. They are beautiful flyers and great to watch.

Return to Grenada

As we sailed back to Grenada we went in close to the coast to look at some of the areas we had missed on the way north. It was worth it even if it was raining at times.
